Colorado has ponied up the funds — $362,700 to be exact — to reopen Rocky Mountain National Park until Oct. 20. This was welcome news for many businesses dependent on tourism in Estes Park. Already, the region has borne a $4.8 million loss this fall.

According to a national study released Thursday, nearly 9,000 homes in Boulder County are at high risk for wildfire. Recent fires in the region have ignited intense debate over construction in the burn zone and FEMA reimbursement.

Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit Earth, died Thursday following a stroke at the age of 88. Carpenter was one of the last two survivors of of the original Mercury 7 astronauts for the U.S. space program.
