The weekly round-up: A gunman and a kidnapping scare

By Lars Gesing

The CU Boulder Police Department recently released its 2013 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. The 45-page document includes three years’ worth of statistics about crimes at the University of Colorado Boulder that were reported under the federal Clery Act. The document can be accessed here.

After a possible armed kidnapping near the Benson Earth Sciences building was reported to CU Police on Monday night, the department asked the public for help in gathering information. The case remains under investigation even though CU police spokesman Ryan Huff told the Daily Camera on Tuesday that there were no persons reported missing.

CBS Denver and multiple other local news reported a danger to public safety on Tuesday. Boulder police officers, rangers and deputies from the sheriff’s office had closed Chautauqua Park to follow up on a call about a suspicious man in camouflage gear – possibly hiding a gun under a blanket – heading up the trails. According to the sheriff’s office, one of the search teams found the man after several hours. He had a .22 pellet gun with him. At Chautauqua Park, it is illegal to carry guns. The suspect was held at the sheriff’s office for mental health evaluation. Rangers are pursuing charges against him for violating the Open Spaces and Mountain Parks regulations.
